DETAIL Prize 2016


The projects will be presented to the independent, renowned jury on 19 July 2016 in Munich. The independent expert jury will define the evaluation criteria for the jury and evaluate the works. 
The decision of the jury cannot be contested. There is no right of appeal.

In a second step, the nominated projects will be presented to readers on the DETAIL website between 01 September and 14 October to determine the winner of the DETAIL Readers' Prize.

Peter Ippolito studied architecture in Stuttgart and Chicago. During this period he was an assistant to Prof. Ben Nicholson (Chicago) and collected valuable practical experience in the studio of Daniel Libeskind (Berlin). He set up Ippolito Fleitz Group together with Gunter Fleitz in 2002. Over the years this multi-disciplinary design studio has built up an impressive international reputation for its interior architecture, communication and product design projects. Many of the studio’s projects have won prestigious awards, including iF Golds, red dots and ADC Awards. In addition to his creative work, Peter Ippolito has held various teaching positions and is in keen demand as a speaker. Peter Ippolito is a member of the German Designers Club (Deutscher Designer Club).
The Ippolito Fleitz Group is a multidisciplinary, internationally operating design studio based in Stuttgart. Currently, Ippolito Fleitz Group presents itself as a creative unit of 40 designers, covering a wide field of design, from strategy to architecture, interiors, products, graphics and landscape architecture, each contributing specific skills to the alternating, project-oriented team formations. Our projects have won over 200 renowned international and national awards.


 
GILLES RETSIN

Gilles Retsin is the founder of Gilles Retsin Architecture, a young award-winning London based architecture and design practice investigating new architectural models which engage with the potential of increased computational power and fabrication to generate buildings and objects with a previously unseen structure, detail and materiality. The studio is interested in the impact of computation and new fabrication methods on the core principles of architecture – the bones rather than the skin. The practice has developed numerous provocative proposals for international competitions, qualifying most recently as one of the finalists for the international competition for the New National Gallery in Budapest. Gilles graduated from the Architectural Association in London. Prior to founding his own practice, he worked in Switzerland as a project architect with Christian Kerez, and in London with Kokkugia. He also co- founded SoftKill Design, a collective design studio investigating generative design methodologies for additive manufacturing and 3D-printing, credited with the first design for a 3D printed house. Alongside his practice, Gilles directs a research cluster at UCL/ the Bartlett school of Architecture investigating robotic manufacturing and large-scale 3D printing. He is a senior lecturer at the University of East-London. He has been invited professor at the Texas A&M University, and has lectured and acted as guest critic in numerous universities such as Karlsruhe University of Technology, ETH, Sci-Arc, UCLA, KTH, Texas A&M and Tsinghua University. His work has been acquired by the Centre Pompidou in Paris, and has been exhibited internationally in museums such as the Museum of Art and Design in New York.

Mike Schlaich, born in Cleveland, Ohio, is Managing Director of schlaich bergermann und partner, Consulting Structural Engineers since 1999 and is chairing the Department of Conceptual and Structural Design – Solid Construction at Technische Universität Berlin since 2004. Furthermore, he is certified proof checking engineer for structural analysis. Schlaich completed his studies and his PhD at ETH Zurich.
The research of the department under direction of Mike Schlaich concentrates also on active and movable lightweight structures in architecture. The multinational team is also working in the field of bionics and artificial muscles, foils, pillows and membranes, which adapt to changing boundary conditions. Other areas of research include the use of carbon materials in the building industry such as the bridge construction. How infra-lightweight in housing can be used sustainably, economically and aesthetically is being investigated intensively.
In his position as Managing Director of schlaich bergermann und partner, he has overseen a range of projects including the Ting Kau cable-stayed bridge in Hong Kong, the footbridge to the City Port in Sassnitz, Germany and the Autostadt Roof and Service Pavilion in Wolfsburg, Germany. Examples of his remarkable designs can be seen all around the world.
As part of his cooperation with international well-known architects like Frank Gehry, Richard Rogers and Sir Nicholas Grimshaw, or with the artist Christo, Mike Schlaich has won numerous national and international awards in recent years, including the Deutscher Brückenbau Preis (German Bridge Award), the Balthasar-Neumann-Preis (Balthasar-Neumann Award) and the Deutscher Ingenierbaupreis (German Award for Structural Engineering). In 2016 he awarded the Gold Medal of the “Institution of Structural Engineers in London”. All of his projects reflect his belief that engineering should always strive to be elegant. He is also the coauthor of the book “Pedestrian Bridges - Construction, Shape, History” as well as of a number of scientific articles. As a specialist in lightweight structures, Mike Schlaich is a firm believer in a holistic, conceptual design approach, and in engineers’ responsibility to contribute more to “Baukultur” - that is the concept of producing quality structures to improve quality of life. He believes in the joy of engineering, while always having in mind the importance of ecological, functional and aesthetic aspects. His ambition and curiosity drive him to always look beyond the horizon and seek new opportunities, using a holistic approach to design wherever possible.


 
ENRIQUE SOBEJANO

Enrique Sobejano has worked as an architect since graduating from the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid and the Graduate School of Architecture and Planning at Columbia University in New York in 1981. He is professor at the Universität der Künste Berlin (UdK), where he holds the chair of Principles of Design. He has been a visiting critic and lecturer at various international universities worldwide. From 1986 to 1991 he was co-director of the architectural journal ARQUITECTURA, published by the Colegio Oficial de Arquitectos de Madrid. He chairs and participates in international conferences and juries and is a founding partner of Nieto Sobejano Arquitectos.
Nieto Sobejano Arquitectos was founded in 1985 by Fuensanta Nieto and Enrique Sobejano and has offices in Madrid and Berlin. Along with being widely published in international magazines and books, the firm’s work has been exhibited at the Biennale di Venezia at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), New York, at the Kunsthaus in Graz and at the MAST Foundation in Bologna. They are the recipients of the 2007 National Prize for Restoration from the Spanish Ministry of Culture and the 2010 Nike Prize issued by the Bund Deutscher Architekten (BDA), as well as the Aga Khan Award for Architecture (2010), the Piranesi Prix de Rome (2011), the European Museum of the Year Award (2012), the Hannes Meyer Prize (2012), AIA Honorary Fellowship (2015) and the Alvar Aalto Medal in 2015. Their major works include the Madinat al-Zahra Museum, the Moritzburg Museum, the San Telmo Museum, the Zaragoza Congress Centre, the Joanneum extension in Graz, and the Contemporary Art Centre in Córdoba. Nieto Sobejano Arquitectos currently have projects in Germany, Spain, Austria, Estonia, Morocco, China and United Kingdom. Two monographs have been recently published about their work: "Nieto Sobejano. Memory and Invention" (Hatje Cantz Verlag, Ostfildern, Germany, 2013) and "Fuensanta Nieto, Enrique Sobejano. Architetture" (Mondadori Electa Spa, Milano, Italy, 2014).

Winner of the DETAIL Prize 2012 with the project Vitznau Holiday Home
 
Daniel Lischer (1962) studied architecture at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETHZ) in Zurich. After graduating from high school he initially worked as a carpenter, before starting university. He graduated in 1989, and then worked for a number of architectural firms - Robert Obrist in St. Moritz, Cruz & Ortiz in Seville, and Jean Nouvel in Paris. From 1996 to 1998 he served as an assistant to Professor Franz Oswald at the ETHZ in the Department of Architecture and Urban Design.
Since 1996, he has managed his own architectural firm in Lucerne with ten employees, which since 2014 has been called alp (architektur lischer partner). He considers his work a craft, and the result a sensory structure.
In 2012, alp was awarded the DETAIL Prize for the Vitznau Holiday Home. The building combines references to vernacular Swiss building culture with a clear commitment to contemporary architecture. What is special about this project is that it has no author. It is indeed a team effort: "Together we're smarter" runs a Japanese proverb, and this applies to the Vitznau Holiday Home and to alp. 
For alp, architecture is a collective process. With a lively team, we look for interdisciplinary dialogue and create surprising and sensuous architecture. We transform visions into building culture, creating spaces with light, material and colour. We find direct answers to complex questions, and are passionately committed to quality architecture. Each work process is precisely and openly overseen until complete. By adopting a differentiated approach, we create values in the building culture.
